We are currently witnessing a shift in computer science from classical, closed computer systems to open, interactive systems whose components harness each other's power. This is particularly true in Human-Computer Interaction, where research has shifted from user interfaces for controlling computational processes to large-scale mediated communication tools, such as the Web, and mixed reality environments that foster creativity. In this talk I will explore the notion of _interactive computation_[1] in the context of Human-Computer Interaction. I will emphasize the need to create novel models, tools and interaction techniques that leverage interaction and treat it as a first-class object. I will illustrate this approach with some of our work at the InSitu lab, in particular instrumental interaction, multi-scale interfaces and reflective, reconfigurable tools.
