The Urban Demography Lab at EPFL has the pleasure to invite you to the next lecture in a series of conferences on population dynamics and urban change in Switzerland and globally.

"Internal migration, population ageing and regional disparities in Germany”
Presenter: Dr. Nikola Sander & Dr. Sebastian Klüsener, Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB), Wiesbaden, Germany

Abstracts:
The talk by Nikola Sander focuses on internal migration and regional disparities in Germany. Drawing on data from the German population register on annual migration flows between 400 counties, we discuss how the intensity and spatial patterns of internal migration have changed since 1991. Results show that the COVID‐19 pandemic was associated with a 5% drop in the intensity of inter‐county migration in 2020 compared to the previous year, with significant variation across age. The pandemic was also associated with an upsurge in net migration losses for the largest cities, driven by fewer inflows of young adults and continuing outflows of families. The lecture also discusses the ways in which internal migration shapes regional population change. For example, migration between East and West Germany upon reunification, as well as rural-urban movements also had a strong impact on regional population sex ratios.

Sebastian Klüsener will talk about population ageing in Germany with a focus on spatial disparities in trends, challenges and opportunities. He will present regional projections which show that the intensity of the ageing process varies systematically across the urban-rural gradient. Another focus will be on urban-rural disparities in mortality and implications for health care provision. This includes a recent study which investigates why mortality due to heart attacks is higher in rural compared to urban areas.
