The principle and mechanisms of upconversion will be briefly introduced. The richness of upconversion phenomena will then be illustrated with examples from our own work. The upconversion properties can be tuned by chemical variation of the materials. Both lanthanide and transition metal ions exhibit upconversion phenomena in properly chosen environments. And the combination of f and d elements in the same material can produce completely new phenomena. The first upconversion experiments on nanocrystals transparently dispersed in a solvent were done about ten years ago. They will be shown, and here is a picture
