This talk will demonstrate how programming can be made more accessible for beginners through the implementation of visual semantics, an approach that bridges the gap between program composition and execution.
To demonstrate how this works, Sverrir Thorgeirsson (ETHZ), will describe the functionality and philosophy behind Algot, a visual, educational programming language that allows to construct programs via direct manipulation of the program state.
Controlled, experimental studies suggest that Algot enhances task performance, improves learning outcomes, and reduces cognitive load. Sverrir Thorgeirsson will discuss how this line of research can have a broad impact on computer science education and outline some planned future work.
