A mechanism is a rule that determines allocation of a resource and payment across individual users. The theory of mechanism design looks into how to design mechanisms that have good properties with respect to * Truthfulness * Revenue * Social welfare What makes the area extremely important and of much research interest are numerous applications, including sponsored search and the allocation of network and computational resources. In this tutorial, I will focus on the revenue and social welfare properties of various standard mechanisms and give an update on the state-of-the-art research in the area.
