A mechanism is a rule that determines allocation of a resource and payment across individual users. The theory of mechanism design looks into how to design mechanisms that have good properties with respect to * Truthfulness * Revenue * Social welfare What makes the area extremely important and of much research interest are numerous applications, including sponsored search and the allocation of network and computational resources.
