Novartis funding instruments:
The Novartis Foundation for Medical-Biological Research offers 3 types of support in the field of medicine and medically oriented biology / biochemistry:
- A.  Research Project Grants: for experienced researchers developing projects at Swiss universities
- B. Young Inverstigaors Grants: support researchers at their early stages of independency at Swiss universities.
- C. Research fellowships abroad.

General restrictions & informations
  • The Foundation DOES NOT sponsor projects that include any Novartis products.
  • Applicants for grants must not have received a grant of the same kind from the Foundation within the last five years (e.g. applicants requesting funding in the first 2025 deadline may only have last received a Novartis Grant  in the first deadline of 2020). The "Research Fellowship abroad" is not taken into account for these restrictions.
  • Resubmissions: No limitations, send in a revised version and explain any changes made to the original in a seperate document.
  • Send your application with all the documents mentioned in each section below attached, to the email address [email protected]. Please mention what kind of grant you are applying for in the subject line.

  • Decisions are communicated by email around 14 weeks after call deadline
Annual deadlines for submission:
  • First submission: 24 January 2025; 23:59:59 CET
  • Second submission: 18 April 2025; 23:59:59 CET
  • Third submission: 12 September 2025; 23:59:59 CET
A. RESEARCH PROJECT GRANTS
A1. Target group:
  • Applicants must be senior researchers responsible for the research project (PI).
  • Upper limit for project applications is 25 years after PhD.
  • Research to be conducted in Switzerland by members of a Swiss university or research institution.
A2. Budget
  • Maximum amount CHF 80’000.00
  • Applicant's salary not eligible
  • Eligible costs include:
  1. Salaries for research staff (i.e. PhD students, Postdocs or other staff needed) > make sure to include social charges in the requested budget.
  2. Instruments or Intrument fees
  3. Miscellaneous (consumables, animal costs, publication fees etc.)
A3. Application:
Your application should include the following:
  • Application Form, Microsoft Excel format, can be downloaded  here: Research projects
  • Scientific part (for details about the format, refer to guidelines), includes:
        > Summary / Abstract summarizing the research project to be funded (max. 1 page)
        > Background (max. 2 pages)
        > Hypothesis and specific aims (max. 2 pages)
        > Experiments to be performed, protocols,methods (max. 2 pages)
        > Significance (max. 1 page)
        > Budget and budget justifications (max.1 page) (If the grant application involves salaries, the applicable social costs should be provided)
        > References (max.1 page)
        > Appendices (for list see guidelines, note that appendices include ethics authorisations)
  • CV and publication lists (covering 5 past years, including for staff whose salary is budgeted)
B. YOUNG INVESTIGATOR GRANTS
B1. Target group:
  • Researchers starting or continuing their first independent research project at a Swiss Institute.
  • At least two years postdoctoral experience
  • Less than 8 years after completion of PhD/MD.
  • Usual criteria apply for extension of the eligibility window (parental leave, taking care of sick persons, clinical training etc.)
B2. Budget:
  • Maximum amount CHF 80’000.00
  • Eligible costs include:
  1. Salaries for research staff (i.e. PhD students, Postdocs or other staff needed, applicant's salary eligible in exceptionnal cases) > make sure to include social charges in the requested budget.
  2. Instruments or Intrument fees
  3. Miscellaneous (consumables, animal costs, publication fees etc.)
B3. Application:
  • Request an institutional support letter no later than two weeks prior the given submission deadline, at  EPFL Research Office, providing:
-project title
-expected starting date
-budget
-short summary of the project


Your application should include the following:
  • Scientific part (for details about the format, refer to guidelines)

  • Confirmation letter (the letter must be 1- requested from EPFL Research Office (see above), 2- signed by the current group leader and 3- countersigned by ReO)

C. RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS ABROAD
C1. Scope

- funds one year of a research stays abroad that will last more than one year.
- Duration beyond the funded year must be funded through third-party.

C2. Budget
  • Max CHF 80'000
  • Covers costs of living, housing, etc.
C3. Applications
Submission consists in:
  • Application form: can be downloaded here.
  • Scientific part, including appendices: for details about the format of the scientific part and the requested appendices, refer to guidelines.
  • Your CV (max. 2 pages) and a list of your publications (limited to the last 5 years)
  • Confirmation letter / Support letter by the host University/ Institute
