Let $R$ be a commutative ring an let $I\subset R$ be an ideal. Suppose that there is a surjective homomorphism $(R/I)^n\to I/I^2$ for some $n\in \N$. A classical question is to know if this surjection lifts to a surjective homomorphism $R^n\to I$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the question to have a positive answer in case R is smooth over a field and derive several result from this, showing in particular that the question has a positive answer over polynomial rings.
