The US National Science Foundation (NSF) is unique within the United States as the federal funding agency supporting fundamental research across all of science and engineering. My four years leading the Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences provided me an inside view of the Foundation and helped crystallized my view of fundamental research. I will discuss the importance of fundamental re- search in several contexts, briefly describe the ways in which the US NSF supports it, and speculate on future prospects.
