In the first half of this talk I will give an introduction to motivic/refined Donaldson-Thomas theory, and explain the role of vanishing cycles in it, focusing on a few specific examples arising from local Calabi-Yau resolutions of singularities. I will then present recent joint work with Maulik, Schürmann and Szendroi on the purity of such vanishing cycles for graded potentials, and briefly discuss the applications of this work in the theory of quantum cluster algebras, specifically in attacking the positivity conjecture of Fomin and Zelevinsky. Finally I will explain the link between graded potentials in Donaldson-Thomas theory and the study of character varieties of Reimann surfaces.
