Paula Stephan is probably the most well-known economist in the field of the economics of science and of the academic research in the United States. She has published a lot of empirical work which has given her a worldwide reputation and has just finished a major book: How Economics Shapes Science? (Harvard University Press, January 2012).
Her seminar will handle some of the problems that academic research in the US face today and which could affect its productivity and quality in the future. Potential problems such as - bigger risk aversion from the researchers; growing inequalities (salary wise) within the academic system; the narrowing of the labor market for post-docs wishing to pursue an academic career – will be developed by Paula Stephan.
