In recent years quantum computing has become a reality with many devices available for public access. This sparked a competition to develop the first application with a quantifiable advantage, bringing together experts from a variety of disciplines, including physics, mathematics, computer science, finance, chemistry, and more. Unfortunately, exaggerated claims and unreasonable expectations are an unfavorable side effect of this innovative new technology. In this talk, we will discuss what quantum computing is, how it could be used for numerical simulation and what is actually possible today. The presentation will be on an introductory level for an audience not familiar with quantum computing. In addition, I'll make an effort to outline the current state of the field and list open research issues.
