Ruthenium-bipyridyl complexes have attracted much attention for their photo-functional properties: photo-luminescence, photo-sensitization, or photo-catalytic ability. We have designed the peptides in which 5’-amino-2,2’-bipyridyl-5-carboxylic acid (5Bpy) as an unnatural amino acid is incorporated, and have further synthesized the ruthenium-peptide complexes. The ruthenium complex with the peptide containing three residues of 5Bpy has been synthesized for the first time, and has been named as “Peptide Origami”. We have also designed and synthesized the ruthenium-peptide complexes for the photo-catalytic CO2 reduction. In this lecture, the mechanisms of the photochemical CO2 reduction by the ruthenium complexes and the design of the novel ruthenium-peptide complexes for the efficient catalysts will be described.
