After “Fukushima” the safety of nuclear installations is being revisited all over the world following the principle of “imagine the unimaginable”. ITER, classified in France as a “Basic Nuclear Installation”, is no exception and it is undergoing a strict process of technical and public examination in order to get its nuclear license. In this talk the licensing process of ITER, the safety characteristics of ITER, and for extension of fusion, will be presented with a particular emphasis to the identification of risks and their possible impact to people and the environment.
