The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) is a thematic organisation of the International Science Council (ISC). SCAR is charged with initiating, developing and coordinating high quality international scientific research in the Antarctic region (including the Southern Ocean), and on the role of the Antarctic region in the Earth system.

With its 2020 Fellowship Call, SCAR offers 3-4 fellowships to PhD students, or Postdocs within five years of having completed a PhD on the day of the deadline for applications, to undertake research in line with SCAR's science and research groups at an institute in one of the 44 SCAR Member Countries.

Who can apply:

  1. PhD students or within 5 years of finishing PhD;
  2. Visiting an Antarctic research facility in or run by a SCAR member country, which is different from applicant's (a) country of origin and (b) current country of residence;
  3. Should contribute to the objectives of one or more of SCAR’s science groups, including the Humanities and Social Sciences group, and/or the Scientific Research Programmes.

Funding & Duration:
  • up to USD 15K for 1 year;
  • Home institute to bear in-home country costs (e.g. visa costs, domestic travel);
  • Host institute to waive bench fees, if any.
