The State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) mandated the ETH Zurich as Leading House for bilateral collaboration with partner institutions in Asia.  In 2021, the Leading House Asia opened a call for proposals for Research Partnership Grants with China (incl. Hong Kong and Taiwan), Japan, South Korea and the ASEAN member states.

Who can apply:

  • Postdoctoral scientists, senior scientists and professors of Swiss federal and cantonal universities, universities of applied sciences, universities of teacher education, as well as public research institutions.
  • The main applicant must be employed at one of the aforementioned Swiss institutions.
  • The proposal has to include at least one co-applicant from one of the partner countries. Asian researchers interested in acting as co-​applicants on the Asian side have to contact their Switzerland-​based peers.

Funding: up to CHF 25’000.-

Duration: up to 12 months

For what:
  • This instrument is to allow researchers to conduct feasibility studies or pilot projects in order to apply for grants from larger funding agencies.
  • A Research Partnership Grant builds on existing collaborations projects between researchers and scientists affiliated to a Swiss institution and researchers from the partner country.
  • Research Partnership Grants can fund the preparation of a joint project proposal for submission to large funding agencies or research projects to develop a long-​​​term partnerships between two institutions or chairs.
  • Activities to intensify joint teaching or curriculum development are also covered by the grant.
  • The call is open to all disciplines.

Eligible costs:
  • Travel, accommodation costs, project consumables and equipment, logistics and salary (only for proposal development).
  • A financial contribution of each partner is expected and must be made explicit in cash and in-kind.

Call timeline:
  • Application deadline: 30 September 2021
  • Decision: December 2021
  • Earliest project start: February 2022
