The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) are launching a third joint call for proposals on the theme of "Designing Future Societies". The call is aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations and World Expo 2025 in Osaka, and is open to projects from all disciplines.

Each proposal for a JRP must have at least one applicant based in Switzerland and one applicant based in Japan; they will be the principal investigators on the Swiss and Japanese side respectively. Further applicants based in Switzerland and/or in Japan can also participate.

Who can apply:

  • At least one main applicant based in Switzerland and one based in Japan. Other applicants based in Switzerland and/or in Japan can also participate.
     
  • Swiss-based applicants: natural persons employed at a Swiss university, a Swiss university of applied sciences or an institution of the ETH Domain. They must be eligible for SNSF Project Funding (ref. EPFL Instructions for SNSF Project Funding). Swiss applicants can apply for this call even if they hold or have applied for other SNSF grants.
     
  • Applicants based in Japan: Please refer to the call document for specific rules and regulations.
     
  • All main and other applicants may only submit one application per call.

Funding & Duration:
  • The project duration is 36 months.
     
  •  JRP proposals contain two separate budgets: one budget in CHF for the Swiss part (to be paid by the SNSF according to the SNSF’s rules) and one budget in JPY for the Japanese parts (to be paid by JSPS according to their own respective rules).
     
  • For the Swiss part, the available budget for this call allows for the funding of 10 projects from all disciplines.
     
  • Eligible costs for Swiss-based applicants: personnel costs, material costs, access to infrastructure costs, open research data, conferences and workshops, international cooperation and networking. With regard to international travel and subsistence, all related expenses are to be covered by the visiting side according to national rules and restrictions. The hosting side is expected to extend the required logistic and research facility support.
     
  • Overhead costs for Swiss applicants are not admissible.

Timeline of the call:
  • Deadlines: 30 June 2022 at 17:00 CEST
    • For the Japanese applicants, please consult JSPS’ website concerning its deadline for submitting the basic information via its online tool.
       
  • Submission: Proposals are to be jointly prepared by the applicants in Switzerland and Japan but will solely be evaluated by the SNSF. They must be submitted by the Swiss main applicant to the SNSF via mySNF.
     
  • Earliest starting date for the JRP: 1 January 2023
