The challenges of heating and diagnosing ITER fall into two groups: (i) The
environmental issues associated with neutron irradiation, tritium
confinement and remote handling; and (ii) The technical challenges
associated with the individual systems. In the case of the heating systems
these include extending pulse durations to the order of one hour, RAMI
requirements and the extension of negative ion neutral beam injection to
1MV. For diagnostics, the environment makes access difficult, first mirrors
suffer from both erosion and deposition and machine control places stringent
requirements that have required specific R&D. These challenges and their
solutions will be described.
