The potential influence of ions from galactic cosmic rays (GCR) on the atmospheric aerosol nucleation processes may play an important role relevant for climate. Similarly, understanding of the dependence of the nucleation rate on the concentration of the nucleating substances has not been reached. With well controlled and essentially contaminant free conditions in the CLOUD chamber, we were able to show that sulfuric acid is an important component for particle formation, however, the concentrations of sulfuric acid are not high enough to explain the atmospheric observations. The influence of ions by GCR on particle formation is evaluated.
