The permeation of water soluble molecules (antibiotics, polypeptides, sugar,...) across cell membranes is controlled by channel-forming proteins and, in particular, the channel surface determines the selectivity. An adequate method to study properties of these channels is electrophysiology. Analysing the ion current fluctuations and compare the data with all atom modelling allows to identify for example the rate limiting interaction with respect to antibiotic influx.
