This initiative supports collaboration between researchers based in high as well as low and middle income countries and addressing different perspectives on Mobility – Global Medicine and Health Research.

The purpose of this call is to promote interdisciplinary and multi-perspective research on how global mobility influences the general health, various health determinants and the well-being of local and mobile populations, and how the effects of mobility could be addressed in a sustainable way.

This call is a joint funding initiative of ”la Caixa” Foundation (Spain), Novo Nordisk Foundation (Denmark), Wellcome (UK), and the Volkswagen Foundation (Germany).

Who can apply:

  • Swiss-based applicants are eligible for funding, but the consortium must be led by an applicant based in Denmark, Germany, Spain, Portugal or the United Kingdom and it must include at least 2 applicants based in 2 different low and middle income countries (LMICs) for a total of 3-5 applicants. The number of co-applicants in LMICs must match (or exceed) those in high income countries.
  • Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent qualification) and must be affiliated to a university or research institution. All career levels post-PhD are eligible.

Funding & Duration:
  • EUR 50K for 10 months for the 15 shortlisted pre-proposals.
  • EUR 1.5M for the 4-6 selected full proposals for 3-5 years.
  • Eligible costs: personnel (incl. 50% of the applicants’ salaries), travel costs, scientific visits, conference and workshop participation, consumables, essential minor equipment, publication and dissemination of results, bench fees and other research-related costs + part-time administrative costs. Does not cover overheads.

Timeline of the call:
  • Deadline for pre-proposals: 30 April 2020 (previously 17 April 2020).
  • Shortlisted pre-proposals will be invited to submit a full proposal in July 2020
  • Deadline for full proposals: 1 June 2021
  • Interview: September 2021, London
  • Decision: December 2021
  • Earliest project start: 1 January 2022
