The Volkswagen Foundation has launched a flash call titled “Corona Crisis and Beyond – Perspectives for Science, Scholarship and Society” to support research projects from all disciplines whose findings not only contribute directly to overcoming the Corona crisis, but can also provide impetus for overcoming major societal challenges in the medium to long term.

This call is not confined to any particular subject area and invites applications from life, natural and engineering sciences as well as social sciences and the humanities.

The Foundation especially welcomes:

  • Projects that – in light of the current pandemic – challenge or question established social assumptions or existing scientific paradigms.
  • Interdisciplinary approaches and the integration of a global perspective.
  • Transdisciplinary projects that seek exchange with representatives of practice, stakeholders and the general public (e.g. citizen science).
  • The use of a wide range of data, which is currently being generated and collected on a large scale.
  • The participation of researchers from outside Germany (but the PI must be in Germany).
Does NOT support: viral research or treatment of viral diseases, the large-scale production of goods (e.g medical supplies like face masks, ventilators etc.) or infrastructural projects.

Funding & Duration: max. € 120’000 (flexible use) for up to 18 months.
  • Eligible costs: Salaries and project-related costs (incl. funding for international partners).
  • Does NOT cover overheads.
Who can apply:
  • Max. 3 applicants.
  • The PI must be a postdoctoral researcher or a professor in Germany.
  • Swiss-based researchers can receive funding as international partners. They must hold a doctorate degree, a habilitation or a professorship appointment.
Deadline: 4 June 2020 at 2 p.m.
Start of the project: as soon as possible
Note: The Foundation is unable to process applications that have been submitted in identical or similar form to any other funding body.
