Numerous neurodegenerative disorders result from the aggregation of proteins that misfold and accumulate as amyloid deposits in the central nervous system. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is one of these protein conformational diseases and the leading cause of dementia in the Western world. There is to date no cure available or early diagnosis for this devastating neurodegenerative disorder. Despite clinical and experimental evidence implicating the intestinal microbiota in a number of brain disorders, its impact on cerebral amyloidosis in AD is not known. During this seminar, we will disclose our latest preclinical and clinical data towards advancing a novel diagnosis concept and testing novel therapeutic candidates for AD based on microbiota profiling and modulation, respectively.
