How component reuse can unlock the circular potential of the construction industry
Presented by Corentin Fivet I Professor - Structural Xploration Lab at EPFL

The construction sector is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, waste generation, and ecosystem destruction in the world. A currently underutilized strategy to mitigate these impacts is to reuse obsolete construction components in new projects. This presentation will explore how this new circular approach has gained momentum in recent years, how component reuse poses new challenges for designers, and how current research aims to massify its application and the environmental gains it can offer. The discussion will focus on the reuse of cuttings from reinforced concrete buildings, and on the optimal reuse of load-bearing components in buildings and its life cycle assessment.
