Meet Your Future Employer : Oracle Labs Tech Talk & 1:1 Info Sessions
ORACLE invites you to join them for an exclusive insight into Oracle Labs and for an overview of their internship opportunities on Tuesday, 17 September 2024 at 5.15 p.m. in room BC410.
1. ORACLE Labs Presentation & Tech Talk (open to all): from 5.15 p.m. to 6.15 p.m.
Oracle Labs is a research center where big parts of Oracle's innovation take place. The research areas span most fields of computer science, and small project ideas can turn into large open-source projects or Oracle products when they mature.
In this presentation, four members of Oracle Labs will talk about the innovation happening at the Labs. After an introduction of the core mission and an overview of all research projects in the Labs, they will dive deeper into four topics:
> Automated Generation of Fine-tuning Data using LLMs
One major way to improve a Large Language Model (LLM) is to perform supervised fine-tuning or preference alignment to fix the identified issues. However, this fixing step requires many high-quality training samples that target the issues to solve, and collecting such samples can be very time and cost intensive since they are usually manually curated by skilled developers. In this talk, you'll see how they leverage LLMs to synthetically generate high-quality fine-tuning data that can be used to improve models on business applications.
> Manage Software Supply Chain Security in the Cloud
The Application Platform project's mission is to research and develop solutions, services, and tools to reduce the effort and human labor required to develop and operate Java apps in the Cloud. Application Platform's first cloud service is Application Dependency Management (ADM): Oracle's Software Composition Analysis on the Cloud. In this talk, they will discuss some of the challenges and problems faced when building a cloud service at a hyper-scale, as well as some explorations we are doing to improve the security, performance, and operations of Java apps on the cloud.
> RDBMS as the Foundation of a Data-Centric Application Runtime
Oracle's hypothesis is that application development and data science can benefit from running code as close to the data as possible. The focus of their work is to enable Oracle Database to execute data-centric workloads written in modern and popular languages and frameworks. They will talk about how they leverage GraalVM to realize this vision, as well as their efforts to evolve Oracle Database into a comprehensive compute platform for serverless applications.
> GraalVM: A story about compilers, meta-circularity, and LLMs
This presentation introduces GraalVM, once hailed as the "One VM to rule them all," and its impact on modern compiler technology. They'll explore how GraalVM, through its Graal compiler and Truffle framework, revolutionizes language interoperability and performance. The talk will highlight Espresso, a meta-circular Java bytecode interpreter, as a key example of GraalVM's capabilities. Finally, they'll discuss the potential synergies between GraalVM and Large Language Models (LLMs).

2. 1:1 Information Sessions (apply by uploading your CV) from 6.40 p.m.
Oracle invites you to participate in an individual discussion with one of their engineers to learn more about their labs and research, internship opportunities projects, and to ask any specific questions you may have.
If you are interested in participating in the 1 to 1 information sessions, please upload your CV during the registration process, by Friday, 6 September 2024, at the latest. Oracle will contact selected students for scheduling their information session.
