In this workshop, Kristina Bogner, Assistant Professor at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development (Utrecht University), invites participants to explore how emotions shape transformation in the context of sustainable change.
By trying on different pairs of physical glasses that embody metaphorical lenses, participants will experience how different emotional frameworks and fields –from positive psychology, emotional political ecology, feminist theory or sociology—can shed a new light on the interplay between feeling, meaning and transformation.
This workshop, which is part of the research project “Feeling Futures” funded by the Center of Unusual Collaborations, enables participants to explore their own and others’ emotions, not as something to manage or transcend, but as the very medium through which pasts and futures are felt, known, resisted, and made.
It offers conceptual grounding and practical techniques for those seeking to understand and facilitate transformation within themselves, their communities, their organizations, or broader political and ecological systems.
This method has a broad application area across education, research, and practice. In higher education, it supports learning by helping students and educators recognize how emotions shape engagement with sustainability and social justice. For researchers and academics, it offers reflective tools to examine their own emotional investments in knowledge production, desired futures, and attachments.
