Category Call for proposal
Aim: The National Centres of Competence in Research (NCCR) programme seeks to promote innovative, top-tier research initiatives with a long-term perspective. NCCR research projects must be of national significance and promote the sustainable development of competence centres and structural capacities at higher education institutions. To this end, NCCR leaders, in collaboration with their Home Institutions (HI) (and with other contributing institutions in the network), have to develop a vision of how they plan to renew, optimise and strengthen the research structures within the institutions and in Switzerland during the NCCR’s funding period, focusing on a clearly designated and thematically defined research topic of national interest. When making its final selection based on an SNSF shortlist of outstanding proposals in both scientific and structural terms, the Swiss government (EAER/SERI) will give a high priority to initiatives that have an affinity with the goals set in the “Digitalisation Action Plan”. The available funding will permit the establishment of presumably 5 to 6 new NCCRs, which can expect to receive a SNSF contribution of up to CHF 20 million each for the first four-year phase. The new NCCRs will commence their activity in early 2020.

Deadline for Outline Proposal: February 1, 2018

Funding of up to CHF 20 million per NCCR for the first 4-year period. In addition to federal funds, NCCRs receive funding from the higher education institutions and from third parties.
Duration: NCCRs may run for up to twelve years, and their duration is divided into four-year-long phases.
Subject: All, preferably in coherence with the Federal Action Plan for Digitalisation.
Specificities: Home institutions must be recognized Swiss higher education research centres (ETH domain, higher education universities and institutions, and research centres of national importance).
