Summary
On Dimensions and Dimensionality

A voyage to nanoland
Mankind has developed early on an awareness of the dimensionality of the space it lives in, but humans have also been curious about the perceptions of lower, higher and even fractional dimensionalities.  After a brief survey of the role of dimensionality in the arts, sciences and philosophy, I will focus on its place in the physical sciences.  In particular, concepts of confinement and quasi-dimensionality in quantum nanostructures will be introduced, along with their impact on the observation of new phenomena and the development of novel materials and devices. Examples from the research work conducted at the Laboratory of Physics of Nanostructures at EPFL will illustrate some of the progress in this field.

Bio
Eli Kapon received his PhD in Physics from Tel Aviv University in 1982.  His thesis concerned single-frequency diode lasers emitting at the infrared range.  He then spent two years at Caltech, Pasadena, as a Chaim Weizmann Fellow, working on semiconductor lasers and phase-locked laser arrays. From 1984 till 1993 he was with Bellcore, New Jersey, first as a researcher and later as a Department Head, conducting and managing research on lasers, integrated photonics and quantum nanostructures.  During that period, he demonstrated the first quantum wire semiconductor lasers.  In 1993, he joined EPFL as Professor of Physics and established the Laboratory of Physics of Nanostructures (LPN).  During a sabbatical leave in 1999-2000 he initiated the Tel Aviv University Center for Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies, and served as its first Director.  In 2001, he founded the startup company BeamExpress, a developer of lasers (VCSELs) for optical communication and data processing.  Prof. Kapon is Fellow of the Optical Society of America, the American Physical Society, and the IEEE.  He is recipient of a Humboldt Research and IEEE Photonics Distinguished Lecturer awards.
