Please join us for the Junior Quantum Seminar with Linnea-Grans-Samuelsson from the University of Oxford who will give the talk "Improved Pairwise Measurement-Based Surface Code" on Friday March 27th from 10h30-12h.
PLEASE NOTE: The Junior Quantum Series are for gathering the junior quantum community of master's students, PhDs and post-docs at EPFL, to create a non-judgmental space were scientific ideas can be shared between peers. This event is not for Professors or senior researchers.
ABTRACT:
In this talk, I present a realization of the surface code on a rectangular lattice of qubits, utilizing single-qubit and nearest-neighbor two-qubit Pauli measurements with three auxiliary qubits per plaquette. The code is optimized for Majorana-based hardware. It has a short operation period of 4 steps and is designed to handle problematic error types well, in particular so-called “hook errors” and the presence of dead components. I also discuss the construction of an efficient decoder for the code, and show the simulated code performance under the standard circuit noise model. The performance simulations indicate that the code has a high threshold of about 0.66% and is competitive with the current state-of-the-art quantum error correcting code for Majorana-based hardware, the 4.8.8. Floquet code. I also briefly discuss how the strategy for stabilizer measurements here used for the surface code can be used more generally, and in particular how it was also used to construct a measurement-based code on only eight qubits, which to our knowledge is the smallest fault-tolerant error correcting Floquet code.
