TITLE: "Inside the Nature portfolio"

ABSTRACT:  Since its launch in 1869, Nature has seen its mission as two-fold: facilitating the prompt communication of the most important scientific developments between experts, while at the same time fostering a greater appreciation of these works amongst the wider public. Although the publishing landscape for scientific research is currently undergoing a period of rapid change, these core principles remain largely unchanged. In this workshop I will explain how editors navigate the complex landscape of science publishing giving an answer to two main overarching questions.

Why do editors exist? We will unfold the behind the scenes of the editorial process within Nature-branded journals, understanding the role of editorial evaluation and highlighting it´s importance in a changing landscape where differences between journals get constantly flattened. We will explain how Nature Portfolio editors constantly work to create a strong journal identity by developing a broad perspective on a given field across different levels.
What is the significance of “novelty” and how is it linked to science publishing? We will explain the criteria that editors use to evaluate submissions. Starting from the way we ensure rational decision, to the rigorous selection of referees and the decision-making process based on the reviewers’ feedback.

BIO: Cristiano joined Nature Communications in February 2021. He received a B.S. degree from the University of Camerino and a MSc in physical chemistry from the University of Pavia. He obtained his PhD from the Institute of Material Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CISC), with a thesis on hybrid plasmonic-photonic nanostructures for enhanced spectroscopies. After his doctorate, Cristiano started as an Assistant Editor at MDPI and few months later moved to Springer Nature where he is now a Senior Editor. His team deal with quantum, atomic, molecular and optical physics and in he is responsible for the content in the areas of photonics, nonlinear optics, lasing, nanooptics and metamaterials.
