The CLIMACT seminar series “How to move forward and act on climate change” is an interactive online event. It takes place twice a month, every second Monday during your lunch break, with two new speakers. Each episode aims to strengthen the dialogue and collaboration between key UNIL and EPFL scientists, swiss politicians, entrepreneurs and various actors from the civil society, through collective reflection. A wide range of climate change-related topics will be discussed, integrating perspectives from all sectors and academic disciplines in order to generate new leads and initiatives towards systemic solutions. Participants are welcome to take part in the discussion in English or French.

Les systèmes hydro-climatiques rencontrés dans les Alpes suisses et dans l’Himalaya népalais présentent des caractéristiques similaires, au-delà des particularités régionales. Les impacts des projections climatiques fournies par le 6e rapport du GIEC sur le cycle de l’eau dans ces deux régions d’étude montrent que la réduction des volumes de neige en montagne, ainsi que le changement du moment de la fonte des neiges, entraînent l’apparition de nouvelles périodes du stress hydrique dans ces régions. Le rôle des sols pour la disponibilité de l’eau en montagne est ensuite mis en évidence. Cependant, les estimations des variables climatiques à l’échelle locale dans les régions de montagne sont limitées à la fois par la forte hétérogénéité de ces régions et le manque de mesures in situ. Enfin, un exemple d’instrumentation en cours pour la caractérisation de la fonte des neiges dans les Alpes suisses est exposé.
Climate Change in Nepal Himalayas: Current State and Future Prospect

In this presentation, Prof. Binod Dawadi will address Climate Change and its impacts on Nepal. Current scenarios show that Nepal has been warming by about 0.6 oC per decade, at least three times as high as the global average. Climate change-induced disaster events are on the rise, accounting for 80% of loss of property caused by disasters attributable to climate hazards, particularly water-related events such as floods, landslides and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). Impacts of Climate Change are visible on water resources, agriculture and the livelihood of the people. People of the high elevation region of Nepal Himalayas are being affected by the impact of climate and already creating a new class of climate refugees. Collaborative action from national/international organization is needed to make the Himalayas climate-resilient.
