Title:
Architects and Engineers
Abstract
The split between architecture and engineering represents one of the most crucial theoretical problems for the built environment. Since the split was officially defined in the 18th century, the relationship between these two professions has been not easy, to say the least. In order to be assessed in its own right terms, the division between architecture and engineering must be understood within the wider division of labor that is at work in the capitalist mode of production. My argument is that in order to make architecture (and engineering), not just relevant, but also effective vis-à-vis the challenges of the contemporary condition, these two forms of knowledge must be reunited within an overall project that can find in the polytechnic curriculum a fertile ground for mutual influence.
About the speaker
Pier Vittorio Aureli teaches at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) where he directs the laboratory ‘Theory and Project of Domestic Space’. He previously taught at the Architectural Association in London and Yale School of Architecture. Aureli studied at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia IUAV, at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam and obtained his PhD from the Technische Universiteit Delft. He is the author of many essays and books, including The Project of Autonomy (2008), The Possibility of an Absolute Architecture (2011), Less is Enough (2013), The City as a Project (2014), Living and Working (2022) and the forthcoming Architecture and Abstraction (2023). Together with Martino Tattara is the co-founder of architectural practice Dogma whose work was recently feature in the issue 208 of El Croquis. The work of Dogma has been widely published and exhibited in venues such as the Venice Biennale, Milan Triennale and the Design Museum in London.
