Title:
Architects and Engineers

Abstract
The split between architecture and engineering represents one of the most crucial theoretical problems for the built environment. Since the split was officially defined in the 18th century, the relationship between these two professions has been not easy, to say the least. In order to be assessed in its own right terms, the division between architecture and engineering must be understood within the wider division of labor that is at work in the capitalist mode of production. My argument is that in order to make architecture (and engineering), not just relevant, but also effective vis-à-vis the challenges of the contemporary condition, these two forms of knowledge must be reunited within an overall project that can find in the polytechnic curriculum a fertile ground for mutual influence.
